The Charlie Club
| In 1984, the then prestigious twelve story Illinois Athletic Club at 112 South Michigan avenue was purchased for conversion to an eighteen story athletic club now known as The Charlie Club. A. G. Freiman & Associates were engaged to perform the structural engineering for the structural conversion, including the addition of six stories to the existing twelve stories. The existing concrete foundation caissons, which supports the existing steel building columns, were core drilled the full depth of approximately 60 feet to hard pan, which was so hard that it broke the drill bit. Laboratory testing of the steel columns were performed to justify the additional loading. The building is functioning today, with no evidence of distress due to the addition of 6 stories to the existing 12 stories. As an indication of the structural integrity of the building, the addition of an another story (a penthouse) has been considered. |
